Advent is a period of preparation extending over the four Sundays before Christmas.  The word Advent derives from the Latin word meaning coming. The coming of Jesus into the world.

For Catholics, the Advent candles follow the liturgical colors of three purple candles and one pink (rose). It symbolizes hope, love, joy and peace.  Some may include a fifth white candle, representing Christ, is lit on Christmas Eve to remind Christians of the light Jesus brings to the world.
